Virus and Malware Removal

Viruses change all the time, as such you need Ant-Virus software that is capable of first detecting a possible threat, stopping said threat and most importantly removing the threat if it does get through.

Viruses are as old as the internet itself, and are become more and more complex. The most common sources are;

  • Spam or Spoofed Emails
  • Internet Program & File Downloads
  • Email Attachments
  • Out of Date Software or Operating System

For the last 5 or so years the most prolific virus is what’s known as Crypto or Ransom Ware. This nasty type of virus enters your system and encrypts your files. You are then given half the decryption key, told to email an address, pay up to hundreds of pounds in Bitcoin (which is hard to source in itself) and pay for the other half of the decryption key. Which more than half the time the perpetrators just take your money and you still lose your files. You may remember the “WannaCry” virus that infected the NHS IT infrastructure a few years back. There have been equally serious cases since.

Now, it’s almost impossible for us to manually decrypt these viruses without the key. But there are things we can do to help prevent such as attack such as;

  • Modern Anti Virus software such as Kaspersky, McAfee, ESET.
  • Update Windows Operating System.
  • Honey Pot setup.
  • Setup Cloud Backup.

It is always important to keep 3 backups of your files, On your PC itself, copying the network location and then finally to the cloud. If in case of virus infection it is then easier to recover files from these locations, knowing they are virus free and safe. See our Data Recovery and Backup page for more information.
